Starting Block LLC is a blended psychotherapy and physical fitness practice. We are rooted in the idea that physical health and fitness is an integral part of overall mental health. Our director, Kitty Phillips, LCSW, NSPA is both a licensed clinical social worker (mental health therapist) and a certified personal trainer. She is also a regionally ranked long distance runner.
Our clients are typical 10 year olds to adults who are looking to incorporate fitness and weight/health management into their daily lives. They are also tweens and teens with neurodevelopmental or regulatory disorders who have never been positively reinforced in motor coordination or sports. They are adults with depression or anxiety who benefit from the mood enhancement that cardiovascular activities provide or the calming element that deep muscle training provides. They are children and teens with social skills issues who participate in our small groups. Our clients include children, teens and adults with eating/food disorders, new parents, people with type one diabetes, or people with chronic mental illnesses.
All our clients benefit from the synergy of both brain and body treatment. In addition, they are able to incorporate “fit or strong” into a new sense of self, many for the first time in their lives. In addition, many children and teens do not respond to traditional “couch” talk therapy. The exercise, movement and games provide a benefit in engaging even reluctant clients do that they can feel motivated and positive about coming to their StartingBlock, LLC sessions. Indeed, not only does the therapy benefit the client, but the movement and exercise make the therapy more engaged, deep and productive.
Recent research supports the idea that exercise and movement are as effective as anti-depressants or anxiety medications in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. Our treatment accommodates both, so that our clients are able to progress, to get better, and to live the high functioning lives they want to live.
